Southeast Asia Trip, Day 3: Bangkok

Spent the day with our guide, Tong, who was every bit as wonderful as we’d expected. She made an indelible impression on us, taught us more about Buddhism and Thailand than we could ever hope to remember, and gave us a day full of memories.

We also made an impression on her. Apparently, I’m the first person ever to ask about the shoes that the giant reclining Buddha of Wat Pho was wearing. As it turns out, the Buddha never wears shoes. Ever. And, Thais seem to find it amusing as hell if you think that he did.

  1. Did you get a picture of the Buddha in question so all your readers can judge for themselves?

oh, definitely–you can’t go to Wat Pho and not take the standard set of pictures–one near the head of the giant buddha and a few at the feet. we’re getting ready to post our photos today or tomorrow, so you’ll see what i mean very soon!

  3. Okay, I’ve looked at the photo of the reclining Buddha, and even though not much of the feet are visible, I have to say that what you can see does look an awful lot like toes, complete with toe prints and not the slightest bit obscured by any footwear.
