Sara’s Juice Fast: The Aftermath

I’m happy that we did the fast, and in the end, it wasn’t nearly as difficult as I thought it would be. The desire for food and hunger pangs nearly disappeared after the first day and I was left feeling energetic, clear-headed and refreshed.

That said, I was really excited about eating today. :) I started off with some watermelon and an apple this morning, and had some carrot ginger soup for lunch. (The apple and the soup both gave me two hours of stomach cramps.) Tonight we’ll make a veggie stir-fry, which I hope will be less eventful.

Things I’ll do differently next time:

  • I’ll include a transitional day before starting the juice fast, eating just fruits and vegetables, hopefully avoiding another nasty “healing crisis.” (We intended to do a transitional day this time, but our schedule precluded it.)
  • Less sweet juice. I think I went overboard with the fruit juices and will try to limit them.
  • Longer fast. By day 3 I was just starting to get the hang of things and really felt that another few days would have been great. Next time, I’ll try for a week.

Ron’s Juice Fast: The Aftermath

I finally got a good night’s sleep–went to bed early (midnight) last night. And lo, this morning I felt very good. Getting good sleep is always important, but more so during a fast.

I broke the fast with a large Greek salad and some cooked vegetables, plus a Bolthouse Farms berry smoothie. Felt a bit queasy afterwards, but that went away quickly.

My takeaways:

  • Get enough sleep while fasting.
  • Fast for more than 3 days at a time. It takes that long just to get into the groove.
  • Dehydration happens fast. It’s easy not to drink enough.

When we return from the Middle East, we plan to fast again, this time for at least 7 days. (If there’s interest, we’ll keep a log then, too.)

Great job on the fasting….i’ve got a question. I assume you 2 were doing a fast to detox right? I am just wondering how much weight you each lost in 3 days, if any at all?

you’re right, it was a detox fast. i don’t remember losing any weight during that one, but we recently did another juice fast, this time for 10 days. if i remember right, i lost a few pounds (maybe 5), and sara lost about 7. luckily, we put the weight back on almost immediately once the fast ended.
