Bolshaya Lyubvi

Proof that the language of love is universal:

  • FACT: we went to our friends’ wedding this weekend.
  • FACT: 90% of it (best man’s toast, emcee’s announcements, etc.) was in Russian.
  • FACT: we understand but 5 words of Russian.
  • FACT: we [basically] understood everything that was going on (at least the important parts).
  • CONCLUSION: True love is not limited to the words we understand. When love is in a room, it’s understood by all.

This wedding was our second chance (in one week) to see Rabbi Alfred Landsberg in action. (I hope he doesn’t think we’re some kind of freakish rabbi groupies.) We established the fact that he does rotate his jokes.

The bride was beautiful, the groom handsome. (But, then, this is nothing new.) They were both glowing (with love, we assume ;)) ). The ceremony was touching–but that was mainly because our friends are just so right for each other; it had a sweet, warm, and even “inevitable” quality to it.

Even with all the dancing (fun!), we’re about 10 pounds heavier today. I lost count of the courses after about 6. The food was good, but more importantly, nobody was going to leave hungry. And the carrot wedding cake reminded us (a) of our own wedding, and (b) that our friends are super-cool (because, clearly, only super-cool people choose to serve carrot cake at their wedding).

We even added a 6th Russian word (“Gorka!… Gorka!… Gorka!…“) to our vocabulary.

The funny thing is, the evening was perfect and we had a great time–despite all of these things that went “wrong:”

  1. I accidentally wore my hiking shoes instead of dress shoes. (Doh!) Don’t ask how this happened. (Luckily, they were black hiking shoes, so they [sort of] matched my suit.) It did make for some interesting dancing manoeuvers. On the bright side… I invented a new dance move; I call it “The Mountain Climber’s Shuffle.”
  2. We did bring our camera. What we forgot at home was its battery, which was in the wall, charging. (Doh!)
  3. Nobody got our little gender-role-reversal joke on the dance floor. (Don’t ask–you just had to be there.) So perhaps we made fools of ourselves (doh!)… but at least I got to kiss my beautiful wife. :-*
  4. The photogapher and videographer must have been conspiring to shoot us at the precise moments that we were making the biggest asses of ourselves. (Doh!)

The thing is, all of these minor blunders affected me and Sara. The bride and groom were blissfully unaware–as they should be–and we hope that they had a fun time at their wedding. Perhaps, after they’ve had some time to recover, we’ll ask them. :)

  • hah, but we didn't list the BIGGEST blunder of all! we'll have to tell you when we see you. ;)

p.s.--anything you may happen to see in the photographs or videotape was caused by the copious amounts of vodka we found on our table. :D

  • :)) hah! i love it!

    1. are you suggesting that my subconscious caused me to "accidentally" wear those shoes so that i could seem taller and impress all of the statuesque russian chicks...?

    2. okay, i'll be sure to practice it with sara.

    3. wow, my first blog groupie; i'm honored! let me know if you want an autographed print-out or something. (oh, and i'm glad you liked the church sign generator link--we got a kick out of it, too.)

  • 1. You wearing black hiking shoes to a wedding sounds all too Seinfeldian, ala George Costanza wearing timbs so he could be 5'7...5'6.

    2. When we meet next, I must see the "Mountain Climbers Shuffle."

    3. You and Sara may be Rabbi Alfred Landsberg groupies, but I'm a totally groupie of your blog! I'm going to try that church sign thing later!
